Beautiful datepickers and calendars for web developers

Datepickers and calendars are elements you need often to implement in web applications with some advanced features. Starting from zero can be a very hard work, expecially if you don't have big familiarity with Javascript.

This list include some of my preferred simple to implement and customize datepickers and calendars, for beginner and professional web developers. I suggest you to try in order to simplify your developing process and save a lot of time reusing code already written. The result is really amazing!

1. jQuery datepicker
This is a default datepicker implemented using jQuery UI which is tied to a standard form input. The calendar opens in a small overlay onFocus and closes automatically onBlur if a date if selected. You can also use the keyboard to drive the datepicker:

- page up/down - previous/next month
- ctrl+page up/down - previous/next year
- ctrl+home - current month or open when closed
- ctrl+left/right - previous/next day
- ctrl+up/down - previous/next week
- enter - accept the selected date
- ctrl+end - close and erase the date
- escape - close the datepicker without selection


2. jQuery Date Picker plugin
This is an other interesting jquery datepicker with a lot of options and easy to fit in your web application.

- Flat mode - as element in page
- Multiple calendars in the component
- Allows single, multiple or range selection
- Mark dates as special, weekends, special days

1. Agile Carousel

2. Yahoo! UI Carousel Control
The YUI Carousel Control provides a widget for browsing among a set of like objects arrayed vertically or horizontally in an overloaded page region. The "carousel" metaphor derives from an analogy to slide carousels in the days of film photography; the Carousel Control can maintain fidelity to this metaphor by allowing a continuous, circular navigation through all of the content blocks.

 

3. jCarousel
jCarousel is a jQuery plugin for controlling a list of items in horizontal or vertical order. The items, which can be static HTML content or loaded with (or without) AJAX, can be scrolled back and forth (with or without animation).


4. jCarousel Lite
jCarousel Lite is a jQuery plugin that carries you on a carousel ride filled with images and HTML content. Put simply, you can navigate images and/or HTML in a carousel-style widget. It is super light weight, at about 2 KB in size, yet very flexible and customizable to fit most of our needs.

Debugging PHP applications with xdebug

How to install and configure xdebug. 

Debugging software is not exactly a fun job for developers. The most widely used debugger for PHP still seems to be a var_dump() statement, possibly in conjunction with die() to halt program execution at a certain point. While there is nothing wrong using var_dump() statements in itself, you still need to change the program code to debug a PHP script. And worse, after you have finished debugging, you must remove all var_dump() statements again (well you should, at least). It may well be that a few days later you'll find yourself adding the very same var_dump() statements to your code again because you need to go hunting another bug.

Of course, you could just comment out the var_dump() statements, but that looks really ugly in the code. Another option would be to wrap the var_dump() in conditional clauses, and only execute them when, say, a constant DEBUG is defined. This affects performance, because even if the var_dump() statements are not executed, the conditional clause must be executed. And besides, it looks even uglier in the code.

As we have already learned in the second articles of this series, having xdebug create a trace log might be a better option in this case, because you do not have to change the program code. But a trace log, even if only created for a part of the application, provides us with a lot of information that may not be necessary for the debugging process, so using a debugger is a much better solution. A debugger allows you to pause program execution at any time, inspect or modify the current variable values, and then continue the program. By executing a program step by step, you can closely watch the code doing its job, which hopefully helps you to find out quickly where things go wrong.
